This is how I see the “service to others” that I am giving now, and the service that I will be able to give, when I have finished my education, to be consistent with the fire company’s motto, “Serving to Save Others.”

Guidelines for the essay.

Submit a legibly written, or typed, essay by March 27, 2010.

Clearly indicate all volunteer activities that you are doing.

Explain how your volunteer activities are helping others.

Describe how you think that a community service spirit can be shown by people who work in the careers where you might like to work.

If there is some specific contribution to the well-being or development of others that results from the kind of work that you see yourself doing after college graduation, identify that contribution, and tell why you believe that it is beneficial to others.

Explain how, aside from your career, your college education and your participation in campus life might prepare you for service to others.

Do not limit yourself to these suggestions. If other ideas come to you, and you want to share them in your composition, feel free to do so.

Remember, the essay is the only basis for selection of winners from among all of the qualified applicants for the scholarships. Write well, write thoughtfully, and write enough to tell what you want to say.

(Finalist applicants may be requested to meet with the committee to talk about their essay.)
